C. Constables of Llanbadarn (or Aberystwyth) Castle
8 March 1278. ROGER DE MOLIS (or MOELES) (CChR, Var, 166; CFR, 1272â1307, 94). He was granted custody of all royal lands in Cards on 8 March 1278, and was acting as steward and receiver of north Cards in M.1277â80 after its conquest (CChR, Var, 166; TCS, 1895â96, 104â37). Despite the kingâs order that he should remain in charge until the 1280 Parliament, he refused to stay as constable and surrendered the castle to Bogo de Knovill (q.v.) early in 1280, having allowed the stores and arms to run low (C49/1/19). The king gave him 5 tuns of wine at Llanbadarn on 6 March 1278, and on 27 July 1279 he was nominated to hear complaints against Cynan ap Maredudd from the abbot of Strata Florida (CCR, 1272â79, 448; CChR, Var, 179). He joined Payn de Chaworthâs force at Carmarthen with 2 knights, 7 troopers and 10 lances in January 1277, guaranteed the agreement of peace with Rhys ap Maredudd on 11 April, and witnessed the submission of Rhys Wyndod on 24 April (Morris, 124; E101/3/13; Litt. Wall., 36â37, 49). On 2 May 1277 he witnessed the quitclaim to the king of Mefenydd and Anhuniog by Gruffydd and Cynan ap Maredudd and Llywelyn ab Owain ap Maredudd (Litt. Wall., 41). Rogerâs role in the Conquest was central: in June 1282 he arrived at Chester with a small force to attend on the king; he joined the earl of Pembroke against the Welsh in November 1294, having been appointed marshal of the south Wales army, and in April and June 1295 received provisions at Llanbadarn by sea from Bristol (Morris, 159; Book of Prests, xxxii; CPR, 1292â1301, 126; E101/5/19 nos. 7, 8). Roger served on a number of commissions in 1288â94 in Wilts, Hants and the west country, where many of his estates lay, for when he died shortly before 17 June 1295, he left lands in Bucks, Hants, Berks, Soms, Devon, Herts and Oxon; his son John (b. c.1269â70) had livery of them on 6 August 1295 (CIPM, III, 180â81; CFR, 1272â1307, 354, 355; Sanders, 68). See GEC, IX, 4â5; Knights of Edw. I, III, 160â61.
10 June 1280. BOGO DE KNOVILL, custodian, though he actually replaced de Molis when he arrived in south Wales earlier in the year (CChR, Var, 186; C49/1/19). See also p. 91.
8 June 1281. ROBERT DE TIBETOT, custodian (CPR, 1272â81, 443). See also p. 91.
LUCâ, the janitor, supervising building operations in the autumn of 1283 (C47/2/2/13).
WILLIAM, the chaplain, supervising building operations in the autumn of 1283 (ibid).
GEOFFREY CLEMENT, possibly acting as constable under Tibetot c.1287â88 and certainly in 1294 (E372/134 m.2d; Book of Prests, 215). See also pp. 91â92.
